Shandong University of Finance is a university of higher learning mainly offering programs in finance and economics. The University is jointly established by Shandong Provincial Government and the Ministry of Finance of the People¡¯s Republic of China, and is co-administered by the central and local governments, with the latter assuming the chief responsibility of supervising its operations. The University was founded in 1986, the name of which was inscribed by the late Deng Xiaoping, the foremost architect of China¡¯s reform and opening policy. As a state-run university, it is entitled to recruit students from all over the country and confer both undergraduate and graduate degrees with the endorsement of the Academic Degrees Appraisal Committee under the State Council.
The University has over 14 schools, including School of Accounting, School of Business Administration, School of Computer Information and Engineering, School of Continuing Education, School of Economics, School of Foreign Languages, School of Humanities, School of International Education, School of International Trade and Economics, School of Physical Education, School of Political Studies and Law, School of Public Finance and Public Administration, School of Statistics and Mathematical Science.
Since its establishment, the University has seized opportunities to achieve a fast and steady development under the leadership of Ministry of Finance and Shandong Provincial Government. What¡¯s more, under the guideline of building the University with characteristics and an optimizing structure to achieve a coordinated development, the University actively adapts itself to the requirements of socio-economic conditions and adjusts its disciplinary structure correspondingly in order to heighten its academic level. The University offers educational courses covering 30 areas of study leading to a Bachelor¡¯s degree-----Economics, International Trade and Economics, Public Finance, Finance and Banking, Financial Engineering, Insurance, Statistics, Business Administration, Marketing, Accounting, Financial Management, Human Resources Management, Tourism Management, Auditing, Logistics, Electronic Commercial Affairs, International Business, Administrative Management, Public Governance, Labor and Social Security, Engineering Management, Computer Information Management and Systems, English Language, Japanese Language, Journalism, Law, Social Works, Politics and Administration, Information and Computer Science , Computer Science and Technology. Four of the Bachelor programs, which are Public Finance, Accounting, Finance and Banking, International Trade and Economics, are State-regulates Specialties. There are currently eleven fields of specializations which confer a Master¡¯s degree: Political Economics, Public Finance (Taxation included), Finance and Banking (Insurance included), International Trade and Economics, Statistics, Accounting, Enterprise Management (Human Resources Management included), Technical Economics and Administration, Management and Engineering, Applied Linguistics, and Business Administration. A comprehensive academic structure has taken shape, which establishes Economics and Management as its core and further combines Arts, Law, Science and Engineering.
The University has at present approximately 1,000 teaching and administrative staff members. Among the 706 faculty members, there are 325 professors and associate professors, which accounts for 46% of the whole faculty. And the number of the teachers with advanced academic titles accounts for 71.7% of the whole faculty. The University boasts 1 expert with the title of Yong Intellectual with Eminent Contributions to the Nation, 8 experts enjoying Special Grants from the State Council as well as 4 others with the title of Leader of the Academic Field by the Ministry of Finance. Furthermore, the University also boasts 4 members conferred with the title of Provincial Leading Talented Professional, 5 members with the title of Young Key Member in the relevant academic fields of all the universities in Shandong Province and 46 members conferred with the title of Leading Talented Professional and Leader of the Academic Field at the university¡¯s level. The team of faculty members and scientific research are characterized by high academic credentials, a balanced academic distribution of both disciplines and faculty hierarchy, superior academic qualities, the integration of up-to-date information and greatest potential for higher achievement.
The University is equipped with outstanding modern instructional and laboratory facilities. There are 38 advanced laboratories, including high-tech economic laboratories, management science laboratories, computer science laboratories, multi-media classrooms and language laboratories that accommodates 5192 students. In addition, 2993 computers are available for teaching purpose. The library has a collection of about 940,000 books, 1,200 Chinese and Foreign periodicals of various kinds, as well as advanced electronic reading rooms and data retrieval systems. The University is equipped with a modern broadcasting center, a cable TV¡°virtual classroom¡± educational system and a campus network broadband which directly links with the China Education and Research Network. The University also boasts comprehensive athletic and entertainment facilities, including an auditorium that tops many other domestic universities, a state-of-the-art stadium. With a plastic cement racetrack, and a modern indoor swimming pool. The campus has beautiful scenery and is equipped with perfect student service facilities.
The university is committed to giving prominence to scientific research and increasing the volume of research funds. As a result, the scientific research level is heightened and numerous research projects have been accomplished. During the previous five years, 315 research projects have been undertaken, among which, 24 projects are funded by the state social Science Foundation, the ministry of the Education, 132 by the ministry of Finance and Shandong province and 79 by the Education Department of Shandong Province. 113 projects have been granted the Social Science and Scientific Achievement Awards. Additionally, 24 monographs and 2,739 theses are published in academic journals home and abroad.
Currently, the student population at the University has reached approximately 10£¬937 undergraduate and graduate students on campus, with an additional 8,000 off-campus students enrolled in the further education programs.
Holding itself to high standards of achievement, the University has been actively implementing a comprehensive reform, with improving instructional quality and upgrading research capabilities as the focus. By constantly fostering the competitive and incentive mechanism, the University greatly enhances its teaching standard. Considerable number of graduates have been hired by the ministries and commissions of the central government and prestigious enterprises or enrolled as postgraduates in prestigious national institutions of higher learning. More and more graduates have made gratifying achievements in their careers and are highly acclaimed. The college entrance scores of newly enrolled students into the University are typically higher than most of other universities in Shandong Province. The average employment rate of our graduates has reached 95%, which also ranks top in Shandong Province.
The University has moved to establish friendly intercollegiate relationships with about 30 universities and colleges in over 10 countries and regions such as the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Russia, Holland, Australia, and Korea. Extensive international research and cooperation have been conducted among the partner universities and colleges in such various forms as exchange of scholars, undergraduate student exchange programs, jointly developed research and instructional projects, exchange of reference books and periodicals, hereby establishing multifaceted and diversified patterns of intercollegiate exchange and cooperation.
Over the past few years, the University has invited approximately 100 overseas scholars and professors to lecture or offer seminars as part of academic exchange program. The University has also sent hundreds of scholars and outstanding young professors abroad to lecture and engage in research projects. The University has been granted by educational authorities the right to enroll international students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions, offering undergraduate and graduate courses as well as courses in the Chinese Language and Literature. Many of our students have been sent to study abroad in such countries as the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Holland and Australia according to the cooperative agreements between the University and partner universities abroad.
